...Topiary - description of man-made manipulation of shrubbery into sculptural forms.
It is being said that Topiary was
"invented" in the Roman garden during the first century A.D. Along with the rennaisscance period the topiary fashion was again rejuvenated, also further north in Europe.
On a superficial level it would be easy to see a connection with my beginnings as an artist with these paintings,
however I´m amused by the fact that my "role" is to act as an observer of the topiary - it is rather the gardener, or perhaps the tree itself who are acting the surrealist in this case. An observation of pretence and what is reality...
Paintings from this series of images was first shown in 2003 and is continuing, mainly in the 10"x10" / 25x25cm.
format. Larger "Topiary" canvasses are under way and will probably be exhibited into 2004 or 2005.
